New research suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using these medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
